The reason for such popularity of social networking websites is directly connected with the human psychology, the peculiarities of a human personality as a social creature always trying (with the exception of some particular cases) to live in communities, to always have someone to talk to, share with people about his or her problems, make friends with people who have the same interests. Such desire makes you a human being in the full sense of this word. Another reason why social networks have become so popular nowadays is because of the processes driving the global development today: the hectic lifestyle, little free time, constant aspiration for better and greater achievements. That's why the few free hours that are left during a day are enough for only communicating with friends online and social networks are the perfect tool for that.
